Product Description

FastPrep®-24 5G

Programmable Bead-Beating Homogenizer for Laboratory Sample Preparation

The FastPrep®-24 5G from MP Biomedicals is a programmable bead-beating homogenizer designed for rapid sample homogenization, grinding, and mechanical cell lysis. Its tridimensional bead-beating motion drives collisions between samples and specialized Lysing Matrix particles inside individual tubes, supporting the disruption of challenging biological and environmental materials.

The instrument features a touchscreen interface with predefined protocols and customizable processing parameters to accommodate different sample preparation requirements. The included QuickPrep adapter holds up to 24 × 2 mL tubes per run, while optional compatible adapters support additional sample formats.

The FastPrep-24 5G supports sample preparation for downstream DNA, RNA, protein, and metabolite extraction workflows. Select appropriate Lysing Matrix tubes, adapters, and operating conditions according to validated protocols and the instrument instruction manual.

Research Applications

  • Tissue and Cell Homogenization: Mechanical disruption of animal and plant tissues and cellular samples for downstream analysis.
  • Microbiology and Fungal Research: Sample lysis workflows involving bacteria, yeast, and fungal materials.
  • Environmental DNA Preparation: Processing of soil, sediment, and fecal samples using compatible Lysing Matrix tubes and extraction kits.
  • DNA and RNA Workflows: Mechanical sample disruption before nucleic acid isolation and purification.
  • Protein and Metabolite Research: Sample homogenization before appropriate extraction and analytical procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the FastPrep-24 5G used for?

The FastPrep-24 5G is a programmable bead-beating homogenizer used to grind, homogenize, and mechanically lyse biological and environmental samples before downstream DNA, RNA, protein, or metabolite analysis.

2. How many samples can the FastPrep-24 5G process at once?

The included QuickPrep adapter accommodates up to 24 × 2 mL tubes in one run. Other sample formats require the appropriate compatible adapter.

3. What types of samples can be processed?

Applications include tissues, cultured cells, bacteria, yeast, fungi, and environmental materials such as soil or feces. Select a suitable Lysing Matrix and validated settings for each sample type.

4. How does the FastPrep-24 5G homogenize samples?

The instrument uses tridimensional shaking to drive collisions between the sample and beads in a Lysing Matrix tube. This mechanical action disrupts samples for subsequent extraction or analysis.

5. Can the instrument support DNA and RNA extraction?

Yes. The FastPrep-24 5G provides the homogenization or lysis step before nucleic acid extraction. Separate reagents and purification steps are required to recover DNA or RNA.

6. What speed and processing settings are available?

The FastPrep-24 5G instruction manual specifies a speed range of 4–10 m/s, processing times of 1–120 seconds, and 1–9 cycles, with configurable pauses. Appropriate parameters depend on the adapter, Lysing Matrix, and sample type.

7. Which Lysing Matrix is suitable for soil samples?

MP Biomedicals identifies Lysing Matrix E for environmental samples, including soil, sediment, and feces. The FastDNA SPIN Kit for Soil combines FastPrep processing with Lysing Matrix E and subsequent DNA purification. Refer to the relevant product documentation for details.

8. Where can I find protocols for the FastPrep-24 5G?

The official FastPrep-24 5G instruction manual provides information on instrument operation, programmable settings, and recommended application-specific programs. Refer to the manual and validated workflows before processing samples.
