Frequently Asked Questions

What is SPINeasy?

SPINeasy is MP Biomedicals’ new line of nucleic acid extraction kits designed for simple, fast, and efficient purification of DNA, RNA, and protein from a wide range of samples. The kits utilize premium spin column technology and specially formulated lysis buffers to quickly extract nucleic acids, without the need for an additional inhibitor removal step. Highly pure nucleic acids are free of common PCR inhibitors and ready for any downstream application.

What types of samples can be processed with SPINeasy kits?

SPINeasy kits are compatible with a wide range of standard and challenging sample types, including animal, human, and plant tissues; cultured cells; stool and body fluids (e.g., blood, serum, and urine); bacteria; yeast; insects; and environmental samples (e.g., water and soil).

How do these kits compare to other spin column kits?

Performance data for SPINeasy kits shows higher purity (A260/230 = 2.0 – 2.2) compared to most competitor kits (< 2.0).

What is the average protocol hands-on time?

Our ready-to-use SPINeasy kits are specifically designed to deliver high yields of nucleic acids in just four simple steps. The entire procedure can be performed in < 30 mins, as compared to > 45 mins for competitor kits.

Do I need an inhibitor removal step after extraction for downstream PCR and NGS applications?

The high performing, superior spin column technology and lysis buffer system of SPINeasy kits delivers inhibitor-free nucleic acid extraction, ready for any downstream application (e.g., PCR, NGS, molecular assays). This minimizes the need for additional clean-up steps, resulting in DNA/RNA of the highest purity and integrity compared to competitor (Q and Z) kits.

Do I need to purchase Lysing Matrix tubes for sample homogenization prior to extraction?

No. All SPINeasy kits contain Lysing Matrix tubes that are recommended for the kit-specific sample type. If optimization of sample lysis is needed, MP Biomedicals offers a comprehensive selection of Lysing Matrix beads/tubes designed for any sample type. For selecting the best lysing matrix/bead combination for your sample, we recommend Biopulverizer Lysing Matrix Set I (MP Biomedicals; Catalog # 116750200) and Biopulverizer Lysing Matrix Set II (MP Biomedicals; Catalog # 116850200). For more information, please visit our Lysing Matrix page.

Do I need a FastPrep instrument to use the kits?

The use of FastPrep-24â„¢ 5G, Classic, or Super FastPrep-2â„¢ is highly recommended for robust, reproducible, and efficient tissue/cell lysis. FastPrep instruments, used in combination with Lysing Matrix tubes, aid in releasing all nucleic acids from samples for the best extraction and highest yields. Complete homogenization can be achieved from tough or challenging samples, such as animal and plant tissues, feces, soil, plants, seeds, fungi, gram-positive bacteria, and more. If a FastPrep instrument is not available, the use of the provided Lysing Matrix tubes with a benchtop vortex may be a suitable alternative for tissue homogenization over enzymatic/chemical lysis.

How can I improve my DNA/RNA yields?

If DNA/RNA yields are still not optimal for your sample type, consider increasing the sample input/volume. Some sample types have intrinsically low nucleic acid content and may require a higher input to obtain enough DNA/RNA for downstream applications.

How can I get intact, non-degraded DNA/RNA from my sample preparation?

The quality of the extracted nucleic acid depends on the quality of the starting material. Fresh, well-preserved tissues/cells/plants, etc. generally result in the best nucleic acid extraction. Avoid using poorly preserved, old tissues or refrigerated materials, which may degrade cells/tissues and yield nucleic acid of low quality/integrity.

How do I know which kit to select for my experiment?

Refer to our SPINeasy Selection Guide to choose the right kit to extract DNA, RNA, or protein based on the input sample type. To further optimize sample lysis, refer to our Lysing Matrix Guide.
