LB medium is the most widely used medium for the growth of bacteria. MP Biomedicals offers LB media in a variety of formats for convenience and ease of use. It is a rich Medium for the growth of E. coli and certified for plasmid and other bacterial cultures in liquid medium. MP Biomedicals offers LB media in an encapsulated format for convenience and ease of use.

LB Medium is a nutritionally rich medium originally developed for growth and maintenance of E. coli strains. The ultimate in ease and convenience, LB Medium in a capsule form eliminates the waste, inaccuracies, and mess associated with weighing out bulk powder. The growth characteristics are the same as LB agar powder. LB Medium supports a luxurious growth of E. coli cells as tryptone and yeast extract supply essential growth factors that E. coli cells would otherwise have to synthesize. The medium also contains essential electrolytes for transport and osmotic balance, due to the NaCl component.

Preparation Method Media Preparation: Reagents are tested and chosen for their ability to promote optimum growth of E. coli when combined in LB Medium formulations. Chosen reagents are combined in the proper proportions according to the LB Medium formulation and thoroughly blended for a uniform distribution. A sample of the blended formulation is used to prepare liquid medium. The combinations are mixed to dissolve components and then autoclaved at 121 °C for 15 minutes.

Product Families Description L-Broth/LB-Medium is a classic formulation of nutritionally rich medium originally developed for growth and maintenance of recombinant E. coli strains and is still widely used today. Typical LB formulations contain 10 g of tryptone and 5 g of yeast extract per liter, and can vary in salt concentration from 0.5 g to 10 g per liter. Low or no salt formulations are mainly used when working with phage P1 where CaCl2 is used instead of NaCl to facilitate absorption of the phage into the cell. For plasmid growth, 5 or 10 g of NaCl works well. MP Biomedicals offers three forms of this traditional medium: - LB Medium contains 10 g NaCl per liter - Lennox LB Medium contains 5 g NaCl per liter - L-Broth contains 0.5 g NaCl per liter |Other choices in formulation include with, or without agar, and packaging choices are: |Bulk powder, easily weighed to make custom batch sizes. |Pre-measured, sealed pouches, for 0.5 L or 1 L batch sizes, simply tear open the pouch and add to water. |Encapsulated, the Ultimate in Convenience. Tryptone is used in a concentration of 10 gram / liter and Yeast Extract in a concentration of 5 gram / liter. LB medium is the high salt LB medium type with 10 gram /liter. LB Medium is also known as Luria-Bertani Media, or L-Broth Base, Miller Formulation. LB medium capsules have the same high quality formulation as LB powder with the added advantage of being in a capsule form, eliminating the need for weighing and handling. The growth characteristics are the same as LB powder.
