Bovine Transferrin is chromatographically purified from New Zealand-sourced bovine plasma in an ISO quality system assuring complete traceability and consistent high quality. Transferrin (HOLO) is an iron-rich product supplied as a heat-treated, lyophilised powder.
Application Notes
Bovine Transferrin (HOLO) is frequently used as a nutrient in cell and microbial culture and as a media supplement in bio-pharmaceutical production. Bovine holo-transferrin can be used with a wide range of cell types.

Background_information | Transferrin is the primary iron binding and cell delivery molecule present in serum. Serum-free cell culture systems require a delivery format for iron. Transferrin is the preferential delivery form of iron because cells process transferrin bound iron in a physiologically appropriate way through transferrin receptors on the cell surface. Transferrin is involved in iron transport to developing red cells for hemoglobin synthesis. Each protein molecule specifically binds with two Fe3+ ions to form salmon-pink complexes; bicarbonate or carbonate ions are involved in the formation of these colored complexes. |
