Product Description

Cholic Acid is a biochemical solubilizing agent (a non-ionic, non-denaturing detergent) which occurs in conjugation with glycine or taurine in bile of most vertebrates. It is used in the solubilization of membrane-bound proteins in their native state as well as a component for the preparation of liposomes. There is no synthetic and plant production source of cholic acid. In nature, cholic acid is produced in the liver from cholesterol. The liver converts cholesterol into the conjugated salts of glycocholic and taurocholic acid which are excreted into the bile. Bile is released into the intestine where the bile salts emulsify fats and promote digestion. About 90% of the bile salts are reabsorbed by the intestine and pass back to the liver by a process referred to as enterohepatic circulation. It is also available as the water soluble sodium salt.

Application Notes

Choilc acid is a non-denaturing ionic detergent used for extraction of membrane proteins. Dietary cholic acid has been used in a study to assess its effect on colonic epithelial cell proliferation. It has also been used in a study to investigate extractions and comparisons of human erythrocyte ghosts.
