SafTest™ Training

Total Glycerin Test Kits are designed to measure the amount of total, free, and bound glycerin in B100 biodiesel and biodiesel blends, an approach is consistent with the ASTM method D 6584. This test is designed for use by biodiesel manufacturers and to determine the glycerin content of finished biodiesel products.

Why Total Glycerin?

Glycerol is an organic compound, also commonly called glycerin or glycerine. It is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is a by-product of the biodiesel industry.


Glycerol is a by-product of the transesterification process. For every 1 ton of biodiesel that is manufactured, 100 kg of glycerol is produced. The presence of glycerin in biodiesel, whether free or in a combined form such as mono-, di-, or triacylglycerols, indicates its incomplete removal in the generation of the fuel. Residual glycerin does not burn well and can lead to injector coking, reduced storage, and filter plugging due to sediment formation.


Sample Preparation: Biodiesel blends and B 100 samples diluted 1:10 with preparation reagent.

Limit of Quantitation: 0.004% - 99.6% glycerin
Interferences: Sample containing glycerol and glycerol derivatives

Methodology

To demonstrate method repeatability, accuracy, and linearity, over 30 samples were sent to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and 5 labs currently using the SafTest™ Biodiesel Platform. Samples were analyzed using ASTMCS Official method AOCS Aa 4-38 and the SafTest™ Percent Fat Kit.
