HTLV Diagnostic Perspectives

Indications of testing based on clinical presentation of ATLL or HAM patient with risk factors (e.g. IV drug users, multiple sex partners, resident in endemic areas), undiagnosed myopathy or myelopathy.

The following are the recommended diagnostic tools for HTLV infections:

For HTLV-I / II antibodies screening:
1.
Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)
2.
Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (ChLIA)
3.
Particle Agglutination (PA)
For HTLV-I / II confirmation and differentiation:
1.
Western Blots
2.
Recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA)
3.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
